Project overview
When contractors broke ground in August 2021 at the beginning of a $625million project to create a new U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, it was the start of a new annex incorporating Thai heritage, featuring sustainable elements and climate-responsive design, with completion expected during 2025.
Architectural vision
The architects’ goal was to combine the existing historic building and a new, modern office annex designed with Thai architectural influences, emphasising sustainability, local materials (like wood), and modern security, creating a blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary functionality for U.S. diplomacy in the region.
High security requirements with U.S. Department of State certification
A requirement for two high-security roller shutters, compliant with U.S. Department of State certifications, was specified.
Charter Global were approached by one of America’s most influential design and build contractors, who specialise in delivering successful projects around the globe, and the Obexion MD XR DOS security roller shutter was specified.
Certification and Performance Standards
In the UK, this shutter has been independently certified to LPS 1175 issue 7 SR4 rating, but, more importantly, this shutter has been approved for U.S. government use by the U.S. Department of State. As a third-party certification, DOS approval is recognised globally as an approved product for use on U.S. Department of State projects and facilities.
Department of State Approved Applications
The DOS Certification means the Obexion MD XR DOS is certified for use on U.S. DOS projects, including government buildings, Critical National Infrastructure, and other applications.
The Security of LockDown Technology
The Obexion MD range of shutters uses Charter Global’s unique LockDown technology. This added feature means that the shutter requires no auxiliary locking to maintain the security rating. This technology also ensures that the shutter is never left in an insecure position.
Integrated Safety Systems
This particular project also included a non-contact light curtain safety system to ensure that a shutter can never injure a person.
Quality Control all the way through the process
Manufactured in Reading, at Charter Global, the shutters are fully tested on rigs in the factory to ensure complete quality control before leaving the UK. The products were then transported in treated timber crates designed for international freight shipping to ensure perfect delivery.
Project Outcome and Architectural Integration
The U.S. Embassy Bangkok is a significant diplomatic compound and serves as a vital hub for U.S. diplomacy and commerce.
The deep, layered facades of the 14-floor tower were developed in response to local climatic conditions and in sympathy with traditional architectural forms and Charter Global were proud to supply high-quality, stylish, colour matched products that were sympathetic to this design.
