The origins of the building for this project started back in the 1900’s when a man named Paul Chater co-founded ‘Hong Kong Land’. He built iconic commercial buildings on land reclaimed by the Praya Reclamation Scheme, which is known today as Central Hong Kong. One of the first buildings to be built as part of this scheme was named St. George’s Building in 1904.
An Iconic building with a storyAs the streets of Central HK developed over time, a new 275-foot St George’s Building was unveiled in 1969 and was widely acclaimed as one of the first aluminium curtainwall designs in Hong Kong. Today, the building offers 9,400 sq. ft. of prime office and commercial space for a diverse range of tenants, including financial services, private investors and legal companies. It has a total floor area of 183,000 square feet, with retail shop spaces on the ground floor and office units above. However, one thing that has been retained is the distinctive aluminium cladding, maintaining its reputation as an eye-catching ‘bronze tower’. |

The Security Challenge
During a refurbishment project in 2025, the existing roller shutters surrounding the ground floor level needed to be replaced.
Having shutters with an independent security certification was of great importance to protect the ground floor after retail opening hours, but the aesthetics of the building were also of prime significance, to keep the iconic ‘bronze tower’ appearance.
As an authority in the Hong Kong region for security-rated engineering solutions, Shine Union Limited were contracted to manage the installation of the shutters, but in order to meet the specification of LPS 1175 security certification, they needed a specialist manufacturer, and contacted Charter Global in the UK.
The Obexion Solution
Charter Global offer a vast range of LPS 1175 security-rated shutters – the Obexion product range being the most highly rated – up to LPS 1175 Issue 8 G15.
In this instance, the Obexion UD shutters were the most suitable, and seven Issue 7 SR2 security shutters were manufactured and carefully colour-matched to the cladding of the building.
Suitable for protecting against low-medium level risks in the commercial environment, the Obexion UD SR2 shutter is designed to withstand attack by a determined opportunist using bodily force and mechanically advanced tools.
LockDown Technology built in
It also features LockDown Technology – a unique feature on the Obexion product range, to ensure that the shutter can never be left in an unsecured position where it could be forced open.
The unique profiles lock the shutter in any stop position, whether fully closed or not – even when left partially open due to user error.
This means no auxiliary locking is required, manual or electronic, making it the ideal solution when the shutter is the first and last point of exit from a building.
A Shining Outcome
Charter Global’s project team ensured that the colour for the shutters was matched perfectly, and that the products were crated and shipped to arrive in prime condition on site.
They then worked closely with Shine Union to ensure that any installation issues were resolved, providing the ideal solution for this iconic building.
