Client Confidentiality
We have complete respect for our clients’ confidentiality. Due to the security-sensitive nature of this project, we have not published the client’s name, specific security product chosen or location. Please contact us if you need to know more about this type of high-security project.
The ClientThe client is a global supplier of specialised sterilisation and testing services to medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers and uses radioactive sources to clean and sterilise medical devices. The storage of these radioactive sources is of critical importance, and they are therefore housed within a thick concrete bunker. |

The openings requiring additional security included personnel entrances fitted with lead doors, as well as conveyor belt entrances. Access needed to remain safeguarded at all times.
Although the existing lead doors protected access to the storage areas, additional security was required following more recent government guidance. A security upgrade was therefore necessary to ensure that the entrances could not be breached.
The Security Challenge
The conveyor belt entrances presented a particularly specialist challenge. The overall aperture was very high, and it was not possible for a conventional hinged security door to open and close on either side of the conveyor.
Any proposed solution also needed to preserve the normal operation of the conveyor system.
There Was Only One Solution…
After assessing the available security methods, it was concluded that the only suitable product for this application was a high-security shutter.
Charter Global’s Product Development team worked closely with the conveyor operator to create a 150 mm gap within the conveyor. This allowed the shutter to close while maintaining the operational capabilities of the plant.

High Security and External Face-Fix Installation
A bespoke, very high-security shutter was manufactured and installed around the conveyor belt by Charter Global’s field engineers.
Additional high-security shutters were also fitted to protect the personnel entrances alongside the existing lead doors.
Due to the structural restrictions on site, an external face-fix installation was the best solution for this application. This made the entrances resistant to forced entry and attacks involving high-performance power tools.
Very few products on the market can meet both the high-security and external face-fix requirements presented by this project.
TOTALCARE Aftersales
The client was very aware of the importance of maintaining and servicing the shutters.
As a mechanical product, regular inspection is recommended to ensure smooth operation and to identify normal wear and tear, including potential issues with the motor, before they cause a more serious problem.
Encompassing planned servicing, reactive care and emergency repairs, TOTALCARE from Charter Global provides a complete package.
TOTALCARE reassures clients that shutters can be repaired quickly and that all mechanical and safety components are regularly inspected by Charter Global’s trained engineers.
There are three maintenance plans available, depending on the site conditions, the product itself and the use of the security shutter. These requirements are discussed with the client to ensure that the most appropriate level of service is selected.
Regular maintenance is essential at sites such as this. Should an emergency occur, the facility’s security must not be compromised in any way.
